Fort Myers has a rich and diverse history. The area's first inhabitants were the Calusa and later the Seminole Indians. The Spanish explored the site in 1566, and it became part of the United States in 1821 with the signing of the Adams-Onis Treaty. The first permanent settlers arrived in 1866. The city was officially founded in 1885 when Captain Manuel A. Gonzalez purchased land from the Calusa Indians and established Fort Myers, named after Colonel Abraham C. Myers. The city experienced rapid growth in the late 1800s when Thomas Edison and Henry Ford built winter homes in the area, bringing thousands of tourists and ultimately establishing Fort Myers as a winter resort. The city continued to grow and develop over the years and today is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Southwest Florida.
